What You Need to Know to Reach the Ripe Mission Field Around You
The church in America is about to head into what 747 pilots call a "nose dive," unless some radical changes are made in how churches do outreach.
While there has been no regression in the church's commitment to overseas missions, communities of faith may be unaware of the mission field that is developing around them.
Consider these statistics: There has been a sharp decrease in live births in the United States. The causes are many: abortion, couples having fewer children, people waiting until later to begin having children, etc.
The majority of future population growth in the U.S. will come from immigration.
There are currently 65 million people living in America that speak a foreign language at home. That's out of 300 million, so roughly 22 percent.
Statisticians predict that, based on those trends, in 20 years 100 million people in America will speak a language other than English at home. With a predicted total population of 350 million, that's roughly 28 percent.
This is huge. Because for years missions organizations have coined terms such as UPG (Unreached People Group) and UUPG (Unengaged Unreached People Group) to describe human beings living in geographic areas that have not been reached with the gospel.
Individuals and families from these UPG and UUPG groups will be moving to America, on your turf, where the gospel is--or should be--abundant.
And this is a big deal because it turns your own community into a ripe mission field.
But, simultaneously, there are also disturbing trends.
One major evangelical denomination reports that it expects 90 percent of its churches to close their doors within the next 10 years.
How could this be? There are several factors. But the primary cause is that the churches are greying. The simple fact is churches in America are failing to reach or retain young people.
Yet with a vast mission field moving into your community, this doesn't have to be the case.
Experts believe that what is needed are outreach methods and materials that are capable of reaching young people as well as families for whom English is not a first language.
Young people love multimedia, especially video.
Video consistently ranks among the first results for any search done on the internet. Youtube is the fourth most visited web site in the world. And, despite the down-sizing of big box video rental stores, the motion picture industry is still a billion dollar industry. And, people are watching movies at home on DVD or Blue Ray now more than ever.
For reaching those 65 million people living in America speaking a non-English language at home, a "language versatile resource" is a must. Some ministry activity is actually ahead of the curve on this one.
Consider the "Combo" DVD, which contains the abridged version of the classic JESUS film. (The JESUS film, in its unedited, original form is the motion picture version of the entire Gospel According to Luke and is considered the most accurate portrayal of Christ ever filmed.) The "Combo" DVD's version of the JESUS film offers the viewer versions in English, Spanish, German, Arabic, Korean, Tagalog, Vietnamese and subtitles in English, Spanish, Italian, and Portuguese. Essentially, that covers nine of the world's most common languages!
This same DVD contains the children's version of the JESUS film, known as The Story of Jesus for Children (in English and Spanish).
This makes the "Combo" DVD both a "language versatile resource" as well as a tool that can minister to an entire household, to both young and old.
With the "Combo" DVD, opportunities for your church to share the message of salvation through Christ in your community are virtually endless. Because of the film’s non-threatening, visual approach, it is highly effective at reaching today’s “sight and sound” culture.
“This video makes it easy,” agrees Dr. Ben Carson, director of pediatric neurosurgery at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, MD. “Everybody loves the video. It gives that person who really doesn’t feel that they have the missionary bent an opportunity to have an impact in the area where they live.”
Imagine introducing Christ to your neighbors and the homes around your church in such a way that people see His life, hear His words, and begin to appreciate His work on the cross.
Now you can stop imagining. Now you can actually help make it happen.
Because Seeing . . . is Believing
Every eight seconds, somewhere in the world, another person indicates a decision to follow Christ after watching the "JESUS" film.
Every eight seconds... that's 10,800 people per day, 324,000 per month and more than 3.8 million per year! That’s like the population of the entire city of Pittsburgh, PA coming to Christ every 28 ¼ days. And yet, if you are like many people, you may have never even heard of it.
Called by some “one of the best-kept secrets in Christian missions,” a number of mission experts have acclaimed the film as one of the greatest evangelistic tools of all time. Since 1979 more than 200 million men, women and children worldwide have indicated decisions to follow Jesus after viewing the film. In addition, through hundreds of partners an estimated 10+ million decisions have been made as the film "JESUS" is used extensively by the Body of Christ worldwide.
The "Combo" DVD version has been used successfully in the U.S. by churches for purposes of evangelism and outreach for the past two decades. Its effectiveness has not diminished. Combining the increasingly popular format of sight and sound with timeless relevance, it is one resource that can minister to an entire household.
Why the "Combo" DVD is an affordable resource for your church to use in community outreach.
Another incentive for using this resource in your community outreach is a budgetary one. You will be using one of the most effective evangelistic strategies in history while saving money on a proven resource. The more you buy, the more you save!
